Mike Donovan sees himself as a reasonable man.
It’s true he’s had to do some hard things in the five years since an EMP turned the lights out all over Ireland and the UK, but he’s always managed to keep his humanity.
Until now.
Until the day a singular threat comes crawling up to the drawbridge of Henredon Castle…a threat that attacks every moral or decent instinct Donovan ever had.
How far will he go now to protect the people inside? Will he sacrifice the weak for the good of the whole? Will he turn his back on the love of his life?
And can he do it in time to save any of them?

I love this series. It really draws you in, the people are relate-able and you care about them.
There are things I dislike or that annoy me.
While, Sarah and Fiona are strong women, they are still relegated to "women's roles" with the men protecting them and doing all the heavy lifting. In the latest books we do have an all female archery squad protecting the castle, but they mostly fold when the s*** hits the fan and can't shoot people. Although, they do eventually rally and do what is needed to do, but only after a man tells them they must... So there is a bit of rampant gender bias.
Also, Sarah, and others do the stupidest things because they "just couldn't stop themselves". Running out a secret tunnel to follow her son who just left with no notice with the ex-husband, and Sarah with not a weapon or anything, in the middle of a battle, with no forethought!! Stupid, and that isn't the only time someone does something completely stupid because their emotions drove them to it.
But I DO love the series, almost like I can't help it, I keep buying each book after the cliff-hanger at the end of the previous one. The author does wrap up the current book's resolution of the previous cliff-hanger, but then there is the "Oh NO! Where is ____" or some other cliff-hanger after all is well.. I dislike that method of getting me to buy the next book, and yet I did, bought em all! <shakes head at myself>

Wit End Book 8 of the Irish End Games edition by Susan KiernanLewis Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

(spoiler alert) I was so looking forward to this latest book in the Irish End Games series and I wasn't in the least disappointed! The only thing that strikes you is the incredibly bad luck these poor people have to keep getting into such terrible situations again and again, almost to the point of stretching credulity, even if it is in a post apocalyptic horror of a world. The only other issue that didn't quite make sense to me is the explanation for the bombing of the castle. For such an advanced group of scientists and thinkers, trying to preserve current science, knowledge and technology it seems awfully counter-productive, if not downright illogical as well as immoral. That said, it does not stop this from being a terrific read and one of the best books I've had the pleasure of enjoying all year! Highly recommended!
A story of a family of three on vacation in Ireland when a powerful explosion of nuclear proportions leaves Ireland totally cutoff from the rest of the world. What happens to the people, who aren't used to living without creature comforts, brings out the best and worst in mankind.
This is a favorite series of mine - I can't wait for the next installment. Never a dull moment. Just when you think the end of the series is near - wham, something happens that lets you know more is to come. Anyone reading this series should start at the beginning. You won't be disappointed.
Am not sure I liked the ending because it was the start of a new turmoil beginning to quickly on the end of the last. To say the least, I am emotionally exhausted. The new danger/quest begins anew with the disappearance of Mike...too early for me to discover or imagine what new adventures are ahead for the group. Suffice to say, I am thoroughly sated with joy and satisfaction having shared the incredible adventure and imagination of storyteller Susan Kiernan-Lewis. Well-written and well done.
I love this series, and this book certainly did not disappoint! Almost all of it took place in Henreden Castle, and it was nice to see Sarah and Mike be able to stay in one place for a while. But were they safe? Never, in this new Ireland! Some new characters, and the return of an old one, definitely added to the suspense. And what a cliffhanger this book ends with! I can't wait to read the next in the series, Dead On, and anxiously await White Out, scheduled to be published before the end of 2017.
Having read the Maggie Newberry mysteries, I did not expect Ms. Kiernan-Lewis to be a science fiction author. The main characters are very similar to Maggie and Laurent; at least, I think so. I was not prepared for the really dark element here. Back things happen and after a brief respite, worse things continue. I read the last book in the series before finding out that this is book 8, so I went back and began reading from book 1. these are definitely worth reading, but you have to be prepared for some really unpleasant adventures for the protagonists. I felt that I had finished a terrifying roller coaster ride by the time I put the book down. I am not sure I recommend reading this at bedtime, as I did.
I've never had a series grab my attention so completely.Every book leaves you waiting impatiently for the next one. Wit's End was no exception. I started reading it the minute I got it and didn't put it down till I finished and I am already wondering how long until I can read the next chapter in this fascinating series. I find myself caught up, believing the impossible, and so completely caught up in these lives and struggles of these characters as they move from impossible challenge to the next. The characters are incredibly human with all the strengths and flaws that make them incredibly endearing and real. I find myself dreading the inevitable end to this engaging series.
I love this series and its characters, and will be sad when it ends, although I understand there will be a few more books in the series. This one didn't have the "coming and going" type of drama the previous ones did, but rather, took place mostly at one site, Henredon Castle, where Mike, Sarah, and their family and community have settled. Although maybe not as breathtakingly exciting from moment to moment as previous books, it did resolve one important character's "death", and did keep me fairly well glued to it. The ending is definitely a cliffhanger, so I hope the next volume comes out soon! I think there's probably also more to learn about what the mysterious group made up of "brilliant mined people" is really up to yet too - especially the role of a previous character in the group. Stay tuned!
