I purchased this book during a repeated crisis involving an adult child. It truly got to the point and greatly assisted me in understanding how to better address the issues. It also gave me insight into my own behavior and what I need to do to so I am not also part of the problem. I have recommended this book to others in need.
Having attended Nar Anon meetings,every week for the past 16 mos, I found this book exceptional in many ways The definition of enabling is the best I've ever been exposed to and the questions posed to determine if you are enabling are so incredibly revealing. I recommend this book to anyone dealing with addiction within their families or with their friends. It is so powerful!!!
This book was just ok for me. It didn't give a lot of help outside of check into AA or find the drinker a recovery program. I am just a parent in search of help and understanding of why. I know only my child can truly help themselves but its hard for a parent to watch. Have found other books on this subject a lot more helpful.
This book was a lifesaver for me, the parent of a meth addict. My once beautiful daughter with a college degree has been crippled for the last ten years from meth use. Meth is not a respecter of persons or who you are or where you come from. I have finally found the courage to stop enabling. Every word in this book spoke to me as I am living it right now. If you have tried everything, this book will forever encourage and support you in NOT being an enabler.
I highly recommend the book "First Aid for Enablers" for anyone who has a child/spouse/sibling/close friend with addiction issues.
The book is an easy read, and it imparts practical advice that can change your life and perhaps even the life of the addict you love.
I like the way they spell out exactly how you are an enabler. I really thought that I was helping, but I was only freeing up their rent money and grocery money for them to buy drugs. I have my grandkids now. I am learning all that I can to arm myself for the next step wherever it takes me.
I let having an alcoholic son run my life for many years. Not even thinking I was enabling....oh no, not me....until I read this book. It really opened my eyes! The author being a doctor and Christian was a big plus for me.
